Technical problems did not affect Cambodia election results

Cambodia’s National Election Committee announced on Sunday that election results taken from “Safety Package A”, including documents and ballots from 13 local polling stations in Kratie province, will not affect the result of Cambodia’s fifth parliamentary election. The announcement came after a compliant was made by the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). At a press conference, NEC Secretary General Tep Nytha said opening the sealed package showed there were some technical problems in the sealing procedures for Safety Package A at the polling station. However, the open package, he said, does not impact the election results and is unbiased. He added that the NEC will take problems seriously and will punish individuals who allow problems to occur.

Prom Nhean Vicheth, Spokesperson for the Constitutional Council of Cambodia, said the Council has only allowed the opening of sealed Safety Package A at 13 polling stations in Kratie province, but not in other polling stations as the CNRP requested. He said the CCC cannot allow opening the seals at every polling unit the CNRP complained about. He stressed that the CCC’s decision is the final legal step in the controversy surrounding this year’s election.
