In late February, the Thai government, for the first time, signed an agreement with Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), pledging to work toward peace talks to end the 9-year conflict which has claimed 5,500 lives. Thai security officials agreed to give the BRN immunity from prosecution in order to defuse the escalating violence.
