(VOVWORLD) - US President-elect Donald Trump defended his plans to impose tariffs on many foreign imports at a news conference on Monday at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.

He claimed tariffs were key to the strong economic growth of the 1980s and 1990s and could continue to boost the US economy.
Trump said that almost no country currently has a trade surplus with the US. He said late last month that on his first day in office, he would place 25% tariffs on all Canadian and Mexican goods.
He also said that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy should be prepared to make a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the nearly three-year-old conflict. Trump said he would talk to Putin and Zelenskiy about bringing the conflict to an end.
