Erdogan insisted that Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq should enact more drastic measures against the PKK, whom Turkey considers terrorists. Erdogan said Turkey will do what it must to defend itself if Kurdish officials take no action.

Violence erupted two weeks ago when IS carried out a suicide bomb attack in the border town of Suruc killing 32 pro-Kurdish activists.

The PKK, who have accused the Turkish government of collaborating with IS, shot dead two policemen during a 2013 ceasefire between the government and the PKK.

President Erdogan has said there may be a “common interest” between the PKK and IS, although the two groups have been seen exchanging gunfire.
