Previously, UN investigators confirmed that the nerve gas sarin was used in an August 21 attack in a Damascus suburb. The resolution accused Syrian President Al Assad’s government of chemical weapon use. The Security Council threatened to punish the Syrian government if it does not obey the regulations in Chapter 7 of the UN Charter which authorizes penalties from economic sanctions to a military intervention to punish violations. Meanwhile, the AFP news agency quoted a Syrian security official on Tuesday as saying that the opposition forces possessed missiles and sarin gas used in the attack near Damascus. The unnamed official “strongly denied” chemical weapon use by Syrian security forces and affirmed that the government forces have no interest in such actions. He said terrorists made the missiles themselves and used them to deliver the sarin. UN investigators on Monday submitted a report on chemical weapon use in Syria to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, which conclude that chemical weapons have been used in a wide scope during the 30-month civil war in Syria. The report did not specify which side used the sarin.
