Entitled "Safe flood-resistant houses: successful models and future directions", the workshop is part of the international conference on sustainable ocean economy and adaptation to climate change.

4,100 safe flood-resistant houses have been built through the project since 2018 to improve vulnerable coastal communities’ resilience to climate change in Vietnam’s central region.

UNDP Chief Representative Caitlin Wiesen said, “These homes will provide safe protection and emergency and also be able to strengthen against the impacts of future disasters. We’ll continue to pursue innovative ways of adapting to new situations. I’d like to reiterate, on behalf of UNDP, our commitments to continuing and deepening the support for the complex and multi-dimensional areas of disasters and climate-related risks which is vital to building a vibrant resilient sustainable Vietnam with no one left behind.”

The initiative was instigated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Construction with the close cooperation of UNDP and the Green Climate Fund.

Representatives of Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai provinces, the project’s beneficiaries, shared their experiences in building safe houses for flood and storm prevention, the project’s effectiveness, and put forth several solutions to improve the future efficiency of the model.
