UNESCO considers World Heritage status for Dong Ho folk painting

(VOVWORLD) -The 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage is taking place from Monday to Saturday in New Delhi, India.

It will examine 68 nominations submitted by 78 countries for inscription, including Vietnam’s Dong Ho folk woodblock paintings.

Under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO maintains three international lists that highlight and promote the diversity of living heritage worldwide and the efforts undertaken to safeguard it. They currently include 788 heritages practiced in 150 countries.

According to UNESCO’s definition, intangible cultural heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festivals, and knowledge and skills that communities, groups, and individuals recognize as part of their cultural identity. Inscription on UNESCO’s lists helps to raise awareness of the diversity of these traditions and encourages countries and communities to take action to protect and preserve them for future generations.
