US and the haunting Sep 11
(VOVworld) – 11 years ago, on September 11, attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center in New York shocked the world and killed more than 3,000 people.
The attacks shattered the image of the US as an inviolable fortress and became an obsession of the US public. In a speech yesterday, US President Barack Obama called on Americans to honor those who served and sacrificed their lives for US security following the attacks. Obama said the US has become stronger and Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda are no longer a serious threat to the US.
These days, security is tighter in New York city and across the US. Police close monitor metro systems, roads, bridges, and tunnels. Polls indicate that Americans are tired of the decade-long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
