US Assistant Secretary of State visits Vietnam

(VOVworld) - US Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Andrew J. Shapiro will travel to Vietnam, Brunei, and Thailand in the next 5 days. On his first leg of his tour in Hanoi on Tuesday and Wednesday, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will lead the fifth meeting of the US-Vietnam Political, Security, and Defense Dialogue. The Dialogue will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation on the topics of peacekeeping operations and training, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, maritime search and rescue, regional security, nonproliferation, human rights, and the recovery and repatriation of US service members killed during the Vietnam War. In Brunei, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will meet with senior civilian and military officials to discuss political-military topics, bilateral relations and defense trade issues. Finally, on his visit in Bangkok, Thailand, Assistant Secretary Shapiro will discuss a wide range of political-military issues, including continuing efforts to enhance partnerships in peacekeeping, humanitarian aid and disaster relief, joint military exercises and exchanges, counterterrorism, and security cooperation.
