US, China launch new round of trade talks

(VOVWORLD) - The US and China began a new round of negotiations in Paris on Sunday, to address their trade truce and prepare for a visit by President Donald Trump to Beijing later this month.

The meeting between Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at the headquarters of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is focused on shifting US tariffs, the flow of rare earth and magnets from China to the US, American high-tech export controls, and Chinese purchases of US agricultural products.

Analysts say the chance of a major breakthrough at these talks is small due to the short lead time and Washington’s preoccupation with its conflict in the Middle East. For now, both sides just try to maintain dialogue, avoid a breakdown in relations, and prevent further escalation of trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
