Hegseth is the first US Defense Secretary to visit Panama in decades, and it came in the context of US President Donald Trump's repeated declarations that the US will take back the Canal.

After discussions with Panamanian officials, Hegseth pledged to increase cooperation with Panamanian forces.

Currently, each year, over 40% of US container ships pass through the Panama Canal, representing more than two-thirds of the canal’s total volume.
