US tightens visa-waiver program

(VOVworld) – The Obama administration on Thursday added Libya, Somalia, and Yemen to a list of countries whose visitors will have a tougher time entering the US, a step to combat threats from foreign jihadists who have been fighting in Syria and Iraq.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, citizens of the 38 countries that are part of a reciprocal visa-waiver program (VWP) will have to face a visa interview if they have traveled to Libya, Somalia or Yemen within the past five years. The Obama administration earlier announced a list of four countries with a high rate terrorism - Iran, Iraq, Sudan, and Syria. The administration will grant limited exemptions to individuals who have to travel to any of the seven countries as diplomats, for military service, for humanitarian reasons, or as journalists. Dual nationals of these three countries will maintain their travel eligibility.
