Council members slammed offensives that have led to record numbers of civilian casualties and UN targeted killings. They called on related parties to quickly reinvigorate peace talks and end violence in Afghanistan.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the UN, reiterated that there is no military solution to the conflict. Only a comprehensive political solution can bring about long-lasting peace and security to Afghanistan. He called on the parties to soon achieve a ceasefire to pave the way for peace negotiations. Quy said Vietnam supports efforts of the UN, the UN mission in Afghanistan, regional organizations, and partners to engage Afghanistan factions in peace talks.
