The request comes as fiercer competition among major countries is causing tremendous consequences to the region.

During an online ASEAN Political-Security Community meeting on Monday, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son also asked ASEAN to maintain a harmonious approach and its principle stance on issues affecting regional peace and security while encouraging partners to actively involve in ASEAN-led mechanisms  to promote dialogue and trust and address shared concerns.

Regarding the East Sea (internationally known as the South China Sea), Minister Son underlined the importance of promoting trust, practicing restraint, and peacefully settling disputes in line with international law including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

He called on ASEAN to continue to work closely with China to ensure full and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and build an effective, practical Code of Conduct.

Mr. Son also voiced his support for ASEAN efforts to resolve issues in Myanmar.
