Vietnam, India boost parliamentary ties

(VOVworld) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has said Vietnam’s legislative body wants to strengthen cooperative ties with the Indian parliament in regional and international forums. At a talk with Indian Speaker of the Lower House Sumitra Mahajan in India on Friday, Ms. Ngan suggested that both sides effectively implement the signed agreements to elevate defense-security cooperation to a firm pillar in bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. The top legislator stressed the need to increase high-level visits between the two parliaments and coordination at multilateral forums like the Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP).
India’s Lower House Speaker Mahajan said India supports Vietnam’s stance on the East Sea that all regional countries need to abide by the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and maintain peace in the East Sea.
Both legislative leaders signed a cooperative agreement between Vietnam’s National Assembly and India’s Lower House, an agreement on joint use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; a MoU between Electricity of Vietnam Corporation and the Indian Energy Service Company, and an MoU between Vietjet Air and Indian Air on opening new air route.
Also on Friday, National Assembly Chairwoman Ngan paid a courtesy call to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Vietnamese leader said both countries need to create a breakthrough to achieve the goal of 15 billion USD two-way trade by 2020. She reiterated Vietnam’s support for Indian petroleum companies to take part in oil fields opened in Vietnam’s continental shelf, study other cooperative opportunities with PetroVietnam and support Vietnam’s involvement in potential petroleum projects in India and a third country.
India’s Prime Minister repeated India’s support for settlement of East Sea disputes through peaceful means on the basis of international laws.
