Vietnam, Singapore enhance parliamentary cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - Singapore Parliament Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin and his wife are on a three-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

After the official welcome ceremony on Wednesday, the two leaders co-chaired a high-level meeting where they agreed that the signing of the cooperation agreement between the two parliaments this time will contribute to promoting cooperation between the two legislative bodies.

They stressed the need to share experiences in building institutions and perfecting the legal system, continue to promote coordination mechanisms at multilateral forums as well as support each other's positions on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

National Assembly Chairman Hue suggested the two sides continue to maintain the exchange of delegations at all levels, strengthen consultation and dialogue in order to make bilateral relations more substantive and effective.

The two leaders agreed to promote connection between the two countries’ businesses in agriculture and closely cooperate in green economy and sustainable development. Mr. Hue said that the two sides need to effectively implement the bilateral defense cooperation agreement, closely coordinate in information exchange, strategic research and training cooperation, and then expand cooperation into such fields such as defense industry, military medicine, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief.

Chairman Hue said he wants Singapore to promote its role in the region, strengthen linkages, support building the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) community, and maintain its centrality. He also suggested that Singapore continue to support ASEAN's common stance on peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation in the East Sea, and dispute settlement by peaceful means on the basis of international law.
