Vietnam strengthens measures against IUU fishing

(VOVWORLD) - The vessel monitoring system has been deployed across Vietnam to prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, particularly violations occurring in foreign waters, according to a meeting of the national steering committee in Hanoi on Tuesday to combat IUU fishing.

Marine enforcement has strengthened its patrol, surveillance, and inspection in key fishing grounds, said Tran Dinh Luan, Director General of the Directorate of Fisheries.

“Leaders of coastal localities must be responsible for strengthening inspection and monitoring of fishing activities. It’s important to complete installation of cruise monitoring equipment on fishing vessels, effectively use the vessel monitoring system, and secure seafood quality and traceability,” said Luan.

At the meeting Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh urged provincial authorities to improve public awareness of fishing regulations and prevent locals from illegally fishing in foreign waters.
