Vietnam welcomes peace deal between US and Taliban

(VOVWORLD) - The UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to welcome a peace agreement between the US and the Taliban.

Resolution 2513 welcomes the Agreement for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan signed February 29 between the US and the Taliban and the Joint Declaration signed on February 28 between the governments of Afghanistan and the US.

The resolution emphasizes that the peace process must be led by Afghans and calls on all parties to step up negotiations towards reaching a ceasefire agreement and a political solution.

The resolution has a provision to review the status of individuals and groups designated in the sanctions established pursuant to Resolution 1988 of the Security Council Taliban Committee.

UNSC members said they hope all parties concerned will take advantage of this opportunity to bring lasting peace to Afghanistan and the region.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, welcomed the peace deal and the joint declaration and thanked the US, Afghanistan, Qatar, and other parties involved for their efforts.

He said Vietnam voted for the resolution in the hope that it will promote long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan and declared Vietnam is ready to help Afghanistan in its peace building and development process.
