Hanoi promotes energy-saving culture

(VOVWORLD) - Hanoi is strongly transforming the practice of effective energy use. This change has been attributed to strengthened communications campaigns which have changed the awareness of the community, every household, residential area, schools and government agencies.

Saving energy saving is gradually becoming an urban lifestyle, a civilized habit for modern Hanoians. Slogans promoting electricity and energy saving have been realized in daily activities such as turning off lights when leaving a room, using energy-efficient devices, prioritizing green transportation, and adopting new technologies in production.

Between 2021 and 2025, more than 340,000 households were trained in energy-efficient practices. Hundreds of thousands of families have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to reduce their consumption of electricity, gas, and petrol, thereby lowering living costs and reducing environmental impact.

In schools, energy saving practices are being disseminated through the "Green School - Energy Saving" model. Campaigns like "Earth Hour" or the "Energy Saving for a Green Future" competitions have attracted tens of thousands of participants. In 2025, the Earth Hour campaign in Hanoi saved 204,000 kWh of electricity, a small number in the city's total consumption, but fostering pride and self-awareness among citizens.

Le Thanh Thuy, Deputy Head of the Environment Management Division at the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that in recent times, Hanoi has paid much attention and proposed multiple solutions to effective energy management.

“The Department of Agriculture and Environment has attached great importance to solutions of using renewable energy, the management of solid waste management, and reducing air pollution from various energy sources. All these solutions aim to introduce the most optimal solutions to efficient energy management," Thuy noted.

Electricity companies in Hanoi have been supporting the public in the energy saving movement. EVNHANOI has organized hundreds of sessions to raise public awareness, sent advisory messages on rational electricity use to customers, provided instructions on using energy-saving devices, and assisted poor and policy households in replacing high-consumption equipment.

Pham Xuan Minh Tri, Secretary of the EVN Youth Union, said, “As Vietnam is striving to achieve net zero emission by 2050, we have disseminated this goal to Youth Union members in the corporation and, through them, promoted it within the community to collectively build a safe, energy-saving, and efficient society.”

Thousands of streets have had their public lighting replaced with LED lamps. Many residential areas have installed solar power systems for common use. Several new urban areas are applying smart energy management models, automatically controlling light and temperature to reduce energy waste. This shift, from infrastructure to community awareness, has forged a new image for Hanoi, a modern, yet environmentally friendly city.

Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Science and Technology for Energy Saving and Efficiency, said, “Hanoi is a major energy consumer. It is successfully implementing the core objectives of the national program on efficient energy use until 2030. This offers great benefits. The Hanoi People's Committee, various agencies, and sectors have also paid great attention to this issue.”

For the 2026-2030 period, under the National Program on Energy Efficiency, Hanoi strives to save 8% to 10% of total energy consumption and reduce power loss to less than 4% across the entire area.

Hanoi aims to save 2.2% of total electricity consumption annually in sectors such as industry, trade and services; construction; management and consumption; and agriculture-forestry-fishery. All enterprises in industrial parks, industrial clusters, rural industrial facilities, and craft villages will be accessed and adopt energy-saving and efficiency solutions.

According to Nguyen Khac Van, Deputy Head of the Energy Management Division at Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, "To implement the emission reduction program and promote efficient energy use, Hanoi is deploying multiple initiatives, with the efficient energy use program being one of the national programs.”

“We are also applying emission reduction programs including the cleaner production program, the waste-to-energy program, the green transition, and green transportation. Hanoi is aggressively shifting to green transportation, moving from fossil-fueled vehicles to environmentally friendly fuels like electric cars and trains," said Van.

With these comprehensive solutions and enthusiastic community response, Hanoi has exceeded many targets for the 2021-2025 period. More importantly, it has formed and spread an energy-saving culture, a new habit contributing to a modern, sustainable, and greener urban landscape.
