Driving up zigzagging mountain roads, we arrive at Huu Lien commune, a region of lush green rice fields and majestic limestone ranges. Since Vietnam’s recent administrative boundary restructuring, the commune has focused on developing community-based tourism with adventure rock climbing as its signature offering.

The climbing area adjacent to Huu Lien valley is just a few minutes’ walk from the village and about a 10-minute motorbike ride from the community tourism site. Vertical cliffs 30-60 meters tall have been surveyed, mapped, and equipped with anchors and ropes that meet international safety standards. Climbers who come to test their abilities on the rocky cliffs usually arrive in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperature is cooler.

After trying rock climbing for the first time and successfully completing a challenging route, Dang Ven Du said: “This is my first time climbing a mountain cliff. It was exciting, but a bit scary. Climbers rely primarily on arm and leg strength, and watching other climbers beforehand really helps. Reaching the top after pushing myself to my limit was a wonderful feeling.”

The climbing routes in Huu Lien are categorized from ‘beginner-friendly’ to ‘advanced’. Duong Thi Hong expressed her excitement after completing her very first attempt.

“I feel really thrilled right now because I conquered the challenge. This was my first time climbing a mountain and, thanks to the support team from Lang Son, I achieved something I thought was impossible. This is a motivation for me to return and climb even higher next time.”

Mr. Son, a climbing instructor and support person from the VietClimb Company, said: “When you climb, mental strength is the most important factor. With a strong will, you can conquer the challenge. The climber and the rope holder support each other throughout the climb.”

Huu Lien is positioning itself as a new destination for rock climbing and adventure tourism enthusiasts. Climbing clubs from Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh have incorporated Huu Lien into their regular training schedule. The climbing trend has increased the demand for homestays, food services, and climbing guides.

Tourist satisfaction motivates local authorities and residents to keep improving their services. Huu Lien aims to develop a small-scale adventure tourism cluster focused on sustainable operation, safety, and environmental protection.
