(VOVworld) - The 2014 Sochi Paralympics kicked off with a lavish opening ceremony at Fisht Stadium, on Friday. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin opened the Paralympics in the presence of about 1,600 disabled athletes from some 45 countries.

Titled “Breaking the Ice,” the ceremony centered around the Paralympic ideal of breaking down barriers, and celebrated Russian history and culture. The ceremony was a spectacular display of choreography, athleticism and light.
