"The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a strong and smart president, and the USA has that, in spades!" President Trump wrote on Truth Social. His statement came as concerns grow about the dangers posed by advanced AI models. Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, announced his resignation last week and warned about grave risks associated with AI.
“You’re building a human-level or superhuman-level mind without understanding what it wants or thinks or the way it thinks, and I think that intrinsically should be quite scary,” Coxon added.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow the rate at which they advance model capabilities. He outlined a three-step framework which offers embedded independent evaluators with employee-like access to verify safety practices, coordination among frontier AI firms to set safety standards and limit unchecked AI development, and international cooperation to manage AI risks. He also raised the possibility of setting up an emergency “kill switch.”
His proposal is backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and billionaire Elon Musk. The warnings pushed shares of several AI companies sharply lower in global markets on Monday.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson said President Trump intends to meet with AI company leaders later this week or early next week to discuss companies’ responsibility for AI safety and the possible role of the government in regulating the technology.
