According to the Canadian government, new tariff rates of 15%, 25%, and 50% will take effect on September 8 and cover around 700 US products.
A 50% tariff will apply to certain steel, aluminum, furniture, and clothing items, and a 25% rate will apply to cheese, household appliances, and some seafood. Electronics and tools will face a 15% tariff.
The list also includes processed foods, cosmetics, plastics, wood and paper products, machinery, and various types of industrial equipment.
The tariffs are a response to President Trump’s decision over the weekend to impose 50% tariffs on approximately 20 billion US dollars worth of Canadian goods, after trade negotiations between the two countries broke down.
Canada has announced a support package worth 7.5 billion Canadian dollars for businesses and workers affected by the tariffs.
