Cuban voters approve new constitution

(VOVWORLD) - Cubans have overwhelmingly ratified a new constitution that enshrines the one-party socialist system as irrevocable while instituting modest economic and social changes, according to Cuba’s national electoral commission.

Commission President Alina Balseiro said at a press conference on Monday that 84% of 9.3 million voters participated in Sunday’s referendum. Balseiro said 87% of voters ratified the charter. She said official results will be announced next week.

The new constitution replaces the current 1976 Consitution.
