The agency quoted Kim Yo Jong, deputy department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and sister of leader Kim Jong Un, as saying the drill involved an intermediate-range strategic missile. Kim Jong Un supervised the exercise.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the DPRK had launched at least one ballistic missile toward waters off its eastern coast from the Wonsan area on Saturday. The missile flew more than 700 kilometers, according to the JCS. A Japanese government source said it was believed to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said senior diplomats from South Korea, the US, and Japan had held a phone call to discuss a coordinated response to teh DPRK's missile launch.
