The pedestrian areas around Hoan Kiem lake in downtown Hanoi were already flooded by the afternoon with a sea of people eagerly awaiting the New Year Countdown Party.
“I hope to enjoy a better year. I hope to get a good job after graduating from university,” said local resident Trieu Thu Hien.
Hanoians were treated with a small fireworks show in front of the iconic Opera House as the countdown to 2018 hits 0. The Countdown Party attracted tens of thousands of people and many popular Vietnamese and foreign artists.

In HCM City, people welcomed the new year with a 3D light show, fireworks, and extravaganza music performances.
“I’ve been living in HCM city for 22 years but this is the first time I have enjoyed such fabulous new year celebrations. I feel like all city dwellers have gathered here for New Year’s Eve. It’s amazing,” Nguyen Phuong Thanh, a local reveler, told VOV.

Unlike Hanoi and HCM city, Da Nang city celebrated the new year three hours earlier with a fireworks show at 9 pm. The municipal authorities also organized various arts performances and a music festival.
