“Next week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment must convene a conference to implement this action plan. Existing shortcomings must be fundamentally addressed, with particular focus on cases unresolved since 2024. We must ensure that all fishing vessels entering and leaving ports comply with required procedures, an issue of particular concern to the EC,” he said.
Chairing a meeting of the National Steering Committee on IUU Fishing and Sustainable Fisheries Development in Hanoi on Tuesday, Deputy PM Dung praised efforts to address shortcomings identified by the EC, including expanding the use of Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) and tightening controls over vessel departures from and arrivals at ports.
He highlighted improvements in seafood traceability and transparency, alongside strengthened patrol, inspection, and enforcement activities by the Coast Guard and Border Guard forces.
The Deputy PM stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy for sustainable fisheries development based on the country’s new resolution on the marine economy. The strategy should cover the entire value chain, from breeding and harvesting to processing and exports, while promoting the application of science and technology throughout the sector.
