Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin, along with his family members killed in an airstrike on February 28 at the outset of the conflict launched by Israel and the US, was placed on a truck for a solemn procession through the streets of Tehran before being transported to Mehrabad International Airport.

Authorities have closed major roads and the capital’s airspace, and have suspended much of daily life for the national mourning period, which began on Saturday and will continue through Thursday. Khamenei, 86, will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, his birthplace.
