In remarks ahead of the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Kyrgyzstan, Mr. Pezeshkian said instability and unrest in the region serve no country’s interests and will pose challenges for everyone. He stressed that countries in the region must work together to ensure security and promote development.
The Iranian leader’s statement followed a US attack on Larak Island in southern Iran earlier on Sunday, marking the first armed clash between the two countries in a month in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran subsequently retaliated with attacks on bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which Iran said were being used by the US military.
According to Iranian media, two people were killed and several others injured in the latest US attack.
Meanwhile, speaking at a meeting of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in North Carolina on Monday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would continue its blockade and increase economic pressure on Tehran. The US Treasury plans to announce new Iran-related secondary sanctions on a weekly basis, initially targeting banks that continue to process transactions linked to Iran.
