Tehran’s demands include an end to the conflict, lifting of the US blockade and piracy, a release of frozen Iranian bank assets, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and security in the Gulf region and Lebanon.
US President Donald Trump said Monday that reaching a diplomatic solution with Iran is still possible even though Iran has changed its position. Trump said the US had hoped Iran would agree to hand over its enriched uranium, but that condition was not included in Tehran’s response. He called Iran’s latest peace proposal unacceptable.
Agios Fanourios I, a very large tanker loaded with Iraqi crude oil crossed the Strait of Hormuz through Iran’s designated route on Monday, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said. The vessel is believed to be the first commercial ship to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in the second half of the past week.
Traffic through the waterway has almost completely stopped since fighting began between US and Iranian forces.
