The ceremony began at 10:45 a.m. local time and was attended by Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, representatives of political parties and organizations, ambassadors accredited to Japan, and guests from Japan and abroad.
Speaking at the ceremony, Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to its Three Non-Nuclear Principles: not possessing, not producing and not allowing nuclear weapons to be introduced into Japanese territory.
She also pledged that Japan would continue efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and contribute to global peace.
The Nagasaki ceremony came three days after a similar peace memorial ceremony was held in Hiroshima on August 6, marking the anniversary of the first atomic bombing in human history.
The annual commemorations in Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain important moments in Japan’s efforts to remember the victims of the atomic bombings and promote nuclear disarmament.
