Upon receiving information about the disaster, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directed Vietnamese representative agencies in the region to urgently contact local authorities and focal points in the Vietnamese community to verify information about the situation of Vietnamese citizens, including whether any Vietnamese nationals were traveling or visiting the affected area at the time of the disaster.
The Vietnamese embassies are working closely with relevant authorities and focal points in the local Vietnamese communities to monitor the situation, update information, and stand ready to take emergency citizen-protection measures in case of any Vietnamese citizens being found in distress.
The latest figures show that the disaster has claimed nearly 180 lives, while almost 1,500 people remain missing, including about 800 foreigners.
