“It was close, but a very, very unfortunate decision,” Trump told reporters. “So we’re making adjustments because it’s very unfair.”
President Trump argued that the 14th Amendment's birthright citizenship clause was intended for the children of formerly enslaved people rather than for foreign nationals or "birth tourism".
He criticized practices where pregnant foreign nationals travel or pay significant sums for "birth packages" so their children automatically secure US passports and long-term advantages.
Restricting birthright citizenship is a central pillar of President Trump's immigration overhaul.
