According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test—carried out by the country’s Missile Administration—was intended to evaluate the operational utility and destructive power of cluster warheads for tactical ballistic missiles. Research institutes under the Missile Administration said, “the Standard Type 2 cluster-bomb warhead is capable of turning into ashes a target area of 12 to 13 hectares with its highest-density power.”
An official from the agency stated that the cluster warheads are categorized into four types based on their intended use, though no specific technical details for each type were disclosed. The Missile Administration indicated that North Korea will enable military units to select and deploy these warheads within the current year according to operational aims and specific features of targets.
