The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the launch was part of routine work by the Missile Administration and affiliated research institutes to improve weapons technology.

The administration described the test as an important step toward improving the performance and sophistication of the country’s offensive weapons systems. The agency did not disclose the missile’s flight range.

Also on Monday, senior diplomats from South Korea, the United States, and Japan held talks to share information and discuss responses to the DPRK’s latest ballistic missile launch.
