Spanish PM calls National Security Council meeting over Ceuta migrant crisis

[VOVWORLD] - Nearly a month after a migrant crisis erupted in Ceuta, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Monday that he would convene the National Security Council to assess the situation in the enclave. Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city on the North African coast bordering Morocco, saw a massive influx of migrants in late July, with around 72,000 people arriving from Morocco. Sánchez has already chaired two meetings on the crisis via videoconference this month.

Also on Monday, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said the government would set up a unified response center to coordinate efforts to tackle the migrant crisis in Ceuta. Spain’s Health Ministry said its Public Health Commission had approved the shipment of 45,000 vaccine doses to Ceuta to address urgent vaccination needs, including vaccines against measles, chickenpox, and polio.
