There are about two million people who are blind or partially blind in Vietnam. Up to 80% of these cases were caused by preventable or treatable conditions, such as cataracts, refractive errors, and other eye diseases.
Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Dong, Director of Central Eye Hospital, said the hospital will send out 48 agents to collect information on eye diseases, their prevalence, and causes from nearly 16,000 people.
"We need the most accurate and up-to-date data on our people's eye conditions to meet Vietnam's socio-economic development needs and adapt to the profound changes of the ophthalmology sector, as well as changes in eye disease patterns," Dong said.
"We need to know who affected, how many are affected, what conditions they have, what the causes of those conditions, and which regions are most affected. These data will help the healthcare sector and the ophthalmology sector develop appropriate strategies to improve eye care and contribute to Vietnam's socio-economic development in the new era."
