During a phone call with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang while Huang was speaking at the All-In Summit in California, Trump said concerns about AI risks are unfounded and argued that the US needs to stay ahead in the technology race.
Trump also defended the construction of large-scale data centers despite concerns about their consumption of electricity and water and their environmental impact.
He said data centers can generate jobs and wealth for states, describing them as “the oil of the next 20 to 25 years”, but added that the development of the sector should be handled carefully.
On Tuesday, US House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected calls for a moratorium on AI development, saying it would undermine the US’s competitive advantage over China.
Johnson said AI companies can regulate themselves and should not be required by the government to slow development. His comments came after the heads of Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI called for a slower pace of AI development.
