A report by the United Nations Environment Programme, or UNEP, highlights the gap between climate pledges and action ahead of November’s COP31 climate summit.
The report says a 2.6-degree rise would far exceed the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping warming well below 2 degrees Celsius while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees above preindustrial levels.
UNEP says the 1.5-degree goal is now out of reach after decades of insufficient climate action. Mr. Guterres emphasized that communities least responsible for climate change are suffering its worst consequences. He called for immediate emissions cuts to protect people from the worsening effects of climate change.
