The measures affect most packaged alcoholic beverages, some dairy products and motorcycles manufactured in Canada. The latest restrictions came after Canada imposed tariffs on around 20 billion dollars’ worth of US goods, with rates ranging from 15 to 50 percent. Ottawa introduced the tariffs in response to Washington’s earlier 50-percent tariffs on a comparable value of Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government would protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.
The Trump administration says Canada discriminates against US producers of alcoholic beverages, dairy products and vehicles. Washington describes the import ban as a response to continued Canadian restrictions on US goods.
The two countries are major allies and trading partners, with bilateral trade totaling about 880 billion dollars annually.
