A US State Department official said the agreement secures long-term US access to Greenland and overflight rights, and paves the way for the US to expand its military facilities there.
Before the signing ceremony, President Trump said the agreement will give the US long-term control over Greenland’s security and other needs.
Denmark insisted, however, that the agreement does not transfer any of Greenland’s sovereignty to the US.
The agreement must still undergo necessary procedures in the Danish Parliament and Greenland’s legislature before it can take effect.
