The US Department of State also revoked its designation of Al-Nusrah Front as a global terrorist organisation. The Treasury Department announced corresponding sanctions relief. The Treasury said the moves were in line with US President Donald Trump’s promise to deliver sanctions relief to Syria.

“Today’s action will help foster additional investment in Syria to promote political and economic stability,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa hailed the move as historic and said it would help the country’s recovery after 14 years of civil war.

Syria had been on the ⁠list since 1979.
