The action on a funding fix is unusual. Normally, Congress waits until the final days or hours of a funding deadline to pass short-term patches, but this time senators acted nearly two months before the end of the fiscal year on September 30.
The Senate bill differs in several respects from the version previously passed by the House of Representatives, explicitly excluding contentious funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). These two agencies have already been funded through the end of President Donald Trump's term under the laws previously passed by Congress.
The vote took place as senators sought to wrap up key legislative items before leaving Washington for a five-week summer recess.
The bill will be sent to the House for consideration when lawmakers return to work in September. If passed, the measure will be submitted to President Donald Trump to be signed into law.
