The trip, to be made at the invitation of Governor General Louise Arbour, will be the first visit to Canada by a Vietnamese Party chief since the two countries established diplomatic relations and is expected to create fresh momentum for bilateral ties.
Vietnam and Canada established diplomatic relations on August 21, 1973. In November 2017, the two countries upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.
Since the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) came into effect, bilateral trade has grown strongly, reaching 8.6 billion USD last year, making Vietnam Canada’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. Canada is also a major investor in Vietnam, with total registered investment approaching 5 billion USD.
