PM Hung received the heads of delegations from ASEAN countries attending the ASEAN Law Enforcement High-level Conference on Cooperation in Combating Criminal Fugitives in Hanoi
He said that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations remains a strategic priority in Vietnam's overall foreign policy, serving as a security buffer and a vital space for Vietnam’s development.
"We will continue to step up the signing of bilateral agreements on extradition and the transfer of sentenced persons between Vietnam and other ASEAN member states. We aim to accelerate the ratification of the ASEAN Extradition Treaty to establish a more robust and favorable legal framework for member nations to combat crime, particularly wanted fugitives," the Prime Minister proposed.
"We also propose establishing a formal cooperation mechanism among ASEAN members for the verification, apprehension, and swift handover of wanted individuals suspected of fleeing from one country to another," he added.
A highlight of the conference was the agreement in principle on the Joint Action Plan and the adoption of the Joint Declaration. They serve as pivotal legal and operational frameworks aligned with the ASEAN Declaration and the Strategic Plan for the 2026–2035 period.
