Addressing the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense General Phan Van Giang said the achievement would help strengthen the self-reliance of the Vietnamese economy and advance the country’s industrial development.
He said the project reflects the Party and State’s long-standing policy of developing an integrated aluminum industry, spanning bauxite mining, alumina processing, aluminum smelting, and downstream manufacturing.
The successful production of aluminum ingots demonstrates Vietnamese enterprises’ ability to master advanced technologies, strengthen management capabilities, develop a highly skilled workforce, and deepen their integration into global value chains, said General Giang.
“It marks an important shift from exporting raw materials and semi-finished products to producing essential industrial materials for key sectors such as power generation, transportation, defense, construction, and high-tech industries,” he noted.
After 11 years of construction, the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant has completed its first phase and begun production with an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes of aluminum.
The second phase, which will raise total annual capacity to 300,000 tonnes, is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter of this year. The third phase is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2027.
The 1 billion USD plant is Vietnam’s first pilot project for primary aluminum production. Its aluminum ingots have a purity level of 99.71%.
