The Vietnamese top leader described the United States as one of Vietnam’s most strategically important partners and called for greater bilateral trade that is balanced, stable and sustainable, and urged both sides to resolve outstanding issues in negotiations toward an agreement on reciprocal trade, creating better conditions for businesses in both countries.
Mr. Lam called for stronger cooperation in science and technology, innovation, high technology, semiconductors, energy and supply chains.
He stressed the need to continue implementing defense and security cooperation agreements, with addressing the consequences of war remaining a priority.
The Acting US Secretary of the Navy said the US supports a strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous Vietnam that plays an increasingly important role in the region.
He said there is significant potential for cooperation in the economy, trade, science and technology, and defence and security, while expressing a desire to expand collaboration in maritime security, capacity building, humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
Also on Tuesday, Vietnamese Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang met the Acting Secretary of Navy in New York.
