At the Foreign Ministry’s regular press briefing in Hanoi on Thursday, spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said Party General Secretary and State President To Lam met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York on September 21, during his trip to the US for the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Ms Hang said: “The two sides noted positive progress in the negotiations toward an early conclusion of a fair reciprocal trade agreement, creating a stable and long-term economic framework for trade and investment relations between Vietnam and the US. On that basis, Vietnam and the US are continuing discussions to advance the trade negotiations and achieve positive results, ensuring the legitimate interests of people and businesses, in line with each country’s development conditions, while contributing positively to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US and to global prosperity.”
At the press briefing, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson also responded to reports that the European Union is considering removing Vietnam from its list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes.
Hang said that, in the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the EU, Vietnam has been closely and responsibly engaging with the European Council and the EU, sharing information on its progress in improving its tax legislation, mechanisms and policies.
These efforts are aimed at building a tax system that is more consistent, transparent and fair, and aligned with international standards and practices, she said.
The spokesperson said the ongoing exchanges will enable the parties to conduct a more objective and comprehensive assessment that accurately reflects developments in Vietnam, thereby promoting cooperation between Vietnam and its European partners for shared development and prosperity.
