Spain’s Interior Ministry on Thursday night declared a national emergency near Madrid and in the neighboring province of Avila, and ordered 10,000 people to evacuate as firefighters struggled to contain fierce blazes.
In France, 20,000 people, mostly tourists at campsites and resorts along the southwestern Atlantic coast, were evacuated as wildfires spread quickly in the Bordeaux region. Some 800 firefighters and many firefighting aircraft have been deployed to contain the blazes.
In Italy, thousands of firefighters are battling dozens of active blazes on Sicily and in the Calabria region.
Intense monsoon rains have caused widespread flooding and landslides in several South Asian nations. In India, the northeastern state of Assam has become the epicenter of the disaster. At least 41 people have died since the start of the rainy season, and 45,000 are currently sheltering in relief centers. Floods have submerged 1,800 villages, causing extensive damage to homes, crops, and livestock.
Flash floods in the eastern province of Nuristan in Afghanistan have left 30 people dead, 80 injured, and 100 others missing. Numerous homes, agricultural fields, and infrastructure facilities have been destroyed.
Severe flooding has caused heavy loss of life and property in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
