The procession is rooted in the coastal community's veneration of the Southern Sea deity, known locally as "Ca Ong" (the Whale). Through these rituals, fishermen pray for national peace and prosperity, calm seas and favorable winds, safe voyages, and bountiful catches.
In addition to the procession, the ceremonial program at Van Thuy Tu Temple includes the preliminary offering, commemoration of the royal decree, offering to wandering spirits, closing ceremony, and a lantern-floating ceremony on the Ca Ty River.
The festive activities featured Ba Trao folk singing, Hat Boi (classical drama), Bai Choi folk singing, lion-unicorn-dragon dances, folk games, street performances, a trade fair, and a showcase of Phan Thiet’s distinctive cuisine.
Dao Quang Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phan Thiet ward, said: “It’s important that the festival is organized with respect for traditional customs and rituals, with the fishing community serving as the central participants. Integrating the festival with tourism is done selectively to ensure we showcase Phan Thiet’s coastal cultural identity without compromising the solemnity or authenticity of the festival.”
